EMERALD COAST SHELL COLLECTORS

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

There are several kinds of shells that are native to Florida. Until recently all we found were broken. This year the shells are in abundance! Shell seekers come to the coast of Destin and find these:

Knobbed Whelk   Lettered Olive   Horse conch    Scotch Bonnet    Junonia

The best time to look for shells is after a fall or winter storm. Go just before and just after low tide, especially in the morning before others gather the day’s treasure. Search for the high-tide line and look in the shallows. To clean, soak overnight in a bleach and water solution.  Use an old toothbrush to remove crusty deposits.  To bring out the best colors, wipe with a mixture of baby oil and lighter fluid.  Who knew!

THE SAND HAS ARRIVED!

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Good, great, fabulous news! The dredger is here! It has been pumping sand for two days now. Destin Pointe was first, now Jetty East and The Islander is next! We are so excited, this has been long overdue. If you are interested in seeing this progress, check our facebook page at IslanderDestin, we are posting photos every day.
